OPTUM

187

Sabang, 26th October, 1922.

Evercé auriž A

from Bushire.

Lately it often occure that spium arrives here

Some vessels continue their voyage with the opium, others discharge it here wholly or partly. Declared destination Vladivostok, Dairen, Keelung (Formosa) and Macro The vessels, lastly arrived here, had much trouble with the crews, principally the officers. These, no lst class people, overindulge in liquor, which causes difficult- ies of different nature. The word "Opiumeniggler" (sic) is then being used a great deal, Availing myself of this state of affairs, I have already learnt of many exploits of opium smuggling in the neighbourhood of Hongkong.

Owner of or interested in those ships is a certain Hadji Hemazee at Hongkong. He is also the proprietor of the cargo of opium, Newazee is the same person who, last year, started transportation of hadjis.

In the roads (or in port) are now:-

TANGISTAN, opium carried, 176 chests (cases?) from Bushire,

all discherged here; leaves for Fremantle and Sydney today.

GENZAN MARI No.2, arrived in bellast from Hongkong; takes

coal (450 tone) and about 100 chests (cases?)

of opium ex Tangistan; leaves for Dairen on 28- th instant.

NAGASAKI, arrived from Bashire with 50 cases of opium;

the opium remained on board; leaves 27th

instant to Keelung.

It struck me that the Nagasaki leaded a very big quantity of coacanuts.

The Governor of

Achsen and its Dependencies at Koeta Radja,
